21 #SoAnchorage Holiday Delights: #6, not turkey

This is farmer Alex Davis. He raises organic pigs in Palmer and sells his pork at the Center Farmers Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Sears Mall. Here’s a hot tip: he told me last week when I came to browse the market that he expects to have more than a dozen organic local suckling pigs on offer this coming Wednesday. It isn’t easy to get your hands on a suckling pig, but they work nicely on a holiday table as a surprising and delicious alternative to the usual turkey or grocery-store ham. Alex says the pigs are 6 to 16 pounds and come fully frozen. If you’re squeamish about meat, scroll down now. If you’re not, check this: here is a suckling pig Alex’s wife made. (He showed me this picture on his iPhone.)

Since we’re on the subject, there are so many other cool things to be found at the Sears Mall market. Like these beautiful French macaroons:

Or freshly-brewed kombucha:

Or fresh pasta:

Or (!) black cod:

Not pictured: tons of gluten-free and vegan baked goods, mushrooms, local tofu and fresh wasabi sprouts, among other finds.
